Cette pièce est la plus grande et la plus rare monnaie d'argent des Carthaginois. Elle valait 12 drachmes et son poids normal était de grammes, selon l'étalon phénicien. On la croit frappée à Carthage même, mais le décadrachme porte au revers le cheval ailé de Syracuse, et ces médailles ne se trouvent jamais en Afrique. Quant a l'époque de leur émission, il est probable qu'elles ont été fabriquées pendant la première guerre punique (264 - 241) et que les pièces égyptiennes de Bérénice Il, également d'un diamètre inusité, ont servi de modèles.
