Mr. Rives replied: he disclaimed the priesthood, or any authority to speak as from the tripod.' He denied that there were any indications that the tariff party was the strongest side: on the contrary, they could not have retained the duty on porcelain without the votes of the two senators from South Carolina. He referred to the president elect as in favor of a moderate protecting system, but opposed to a high tariff.
