Excerpt from The Chaplain, Vol. 22: A Journal for Protestant Chaplain; December, 1965
Perhaps it is well that most writers avoid the insertion of chaplains in their more gross and unrelieved accounts of military life and action. Few authors seem to possess the skill and subtlety to deal with chaplains as credible human beings and also as representatives of a redemptive order in society.
In The Great Escape the pastor in southern Germany near the Swiss border is not a chaplain but he is a ruthless member of the underground with an utterly cynical approach to his grim tasks. He is a credible human being living under severe circumstances but the integrity of his pastoral office is gone.
