In the use of this book I must urge that it is intended to serve as a guide only to the teacher and student. The student must actually see as much as possible of what is here brought to his notice. The book simply marshals in logical order the objects to be studied. No doubt some thing may be learned by a simple consecutive reading of the paragraphs of the book, but the young botanist should not be content to obtain all his facts at second hand; he must see with his own eyes all that may be seen.
