Excerpt from Central Topics in Geography, Vol. 2: The Alps

The Alps are much shorter and narrower than our Rocky mountains, and they extend mainly from east to west instead of from north to south. The Appalachian system, extending from Mt. Washington to Lookout Mountain, near Chattanooga, has about twice the length of the Alps from the Maritime Alps where they touch the Mediterranean.' The Appalachians are also a much broader system than the Alps proper, and only about one third as high.

The western highlands of North America, extending from Alaska to Nicaragua, are about ten times the length of the main Alps, and spread out to a width of miles in the western part of the United States.
