Edward everett hale was born in Boston, April 3, 1822. He came Of a distinguished family. One Of his ancestors, John Hale, was a celebrated clergyman in Massachusetts in the seventeenth century. Nathan Hale, the Revolutionary hero, was his father's uncle. His father, also a Nathan Hale, was one Of the leading citizens Of New Eng land, the editor Of the first daily paper published in Boston, the Boston Daily Advertiser, and one Of the most public-spirited men of his time. Ed ward's mother was a Sister of the famous orator and publicist, Edward Everett, for whom the boy was named.
Talent ran riot in the Hale family. Edward's Sister Lucretia became a celebrated author; his elder brother Nathan, an editor and college teacher.

Kappa society and a member of the Harvard Board of Overseers. His interest in emigration led to his writing a book on Irish emigration, and he was at one time president Of the New England Emi grant Aid Society. Always he was an enthusiastic antiquarian, particularly in all matters relating to New England, and once served as secretary of the American Antiquarian Society. And even this fails to complete the tale of his multifold activities.
