Excerpt from The Modern Part of an Universal History, Vol. 31: From the Earliest Accounts to the Present Time
William, duke of Newburg, was fupported by the court 'of Vienna, and publicly recommended by the imperial ambafiador, though it was imagined he had inltruc trons privately to aflif't the duke of Lorraine. The French too, perceiving they could not carry their point for theft prince of Condé, clofed in with the Newburg party. And gave 'that'prince a very probable chance for fuccefs: The king of England recommended him by letter; the Bran 'denburg anibafi'ador fpoke highly in his praife, and exerted all his interef'c in his favour. The duke himfeifi promifed every thing; but as the afl'embly knew that the perform ance exceeded his abilities, all his profellions paffed for mere compliment. The diet, indeed, acknowleged his meritfbut he was a German, and that circumf'tance alone was fuflicient to render hi'm obnoxious to the nation fo that the emperor's recommendation, as it was not fup ported with money, was rather a prejudice to the candi date, efpecially as the intrigues of the court of Vienna Were well known to be exerted in favour of the duke of Lorraine, who emptied his treafures with liberally promot ing his fon's claim This liberality weighed firongly with the needy avaricious Poles; they filled the duke with hope, and repaid his bounty by 'the mol't generous promifes. For a long time his party was confidered as the molt pow erful; but as foon as the electors obferved that he relaxed in his private donations, their ardor fuddenly cooled his party dwindled, and was foon_ fupplanted by a faction of the Piafles. Which fpun out the feffion of the diet to an in tolerable length, exhaufied the patience of the'nobility.
