Excerpt from A Theory for the Small Deformations of Cylindrical Shells, Vol. 1: Rotationally Symmetric Deformations
It is reasonably conjectured that the thin shell theories may yield inaccurate results in the neighborhood of boundaries (for example, near the edges of the cylinder or in a region adjacent to a hole in the cylinder wall) and for thicker.

Excerpt from A Theory for the Small Deformations of Cylindrical Shells, Vol. 1: Rotationally Symmetric Deformations
It is the purpose of this paper to rectify, to some extent, the inadequacies in tlese approaches to shell theory by system atically deriving from the exact tleory aanroxinate thin and thick shell theories. This includes boundary conditions as well as differential equations and stress displacement relations. We only consider the rotationally symmetric deformations of a cylindrical shell of radius R and uniform wall thickness 2h. However the procedures that are employed mav be suitably ex tended to unsymmetric deformations and to shells of etier shapes.
