Excerpt from Direct Colors on Cotton
Although there is some dyeing of raw cotton in revolving machines, the great majority of the production at the present time is dyed in circulating machines, in which the cotton remains stationary and the dye liquor is forcibly circulated through it by a pump. After the material has been wet out, the dissolved dyestuff is add ed, usually ai a temperature well below the boil. The temperature is gradually raised to the boil and the correct amount of salt is added. The dyeing is continued at a boil or in 'a cooling bath for the required time, usual y about 30 minutes. The material is then given a running wash and the operation is completed.
