Excerpt from The Treatment of Pulmonary Tuberculosis
In 1890 Behring enunciated the doctrine of the antitoxic substances which develop in the animal or ganism from the bacterial toxins, and this led to the introduction of the antitoxin of diphtheria into gen eral medical practice. In spite of occasional adverse criticism and an occasional death due directly to the remedy, it has proved its value in the treatment of diphtheria beyond a doubt, and thousands of lives are yearly saved that would otherwise undoubtedly have been lost.
