For the first time in ten years the Nobel committee announced last fall that no peace prize would be awarded for the year. This has happened sixteen times since the award was instituted in 1901. It would seem a bit presumptuous to second-guess the distinguished group that weighs and announces these decisions. No doubt there are complex factors involved, some of which may not lend themselves to public discussion. Yet, one wonders whether the cause of peace would not be better served if the prize were awarded every year without fail. Even in times of war and international tension the peace award ought to serve as a brave and hopeful reminder of better things and nobler ways.
