And from this faculty, united with that of forming and combining ideas, arife, between him and his fellow creatures, the ties of in tercil and duty, to which nature has aflixed the molt exquifite portion of our felicity, and the molt poignant of our fufferings.

But if we confider this developement ln its refults, relative to the mals of individuals co-exiiting at the fame time on a given fpace, and follow it from generation to generation, it then exhibits a picture of the progref's of human intellect. This'progrei's is fubje�t to the fame general laws, obfervable in the in dividual developement of our faculties; being the refult of that very developement confia dered at once in a great number of indivi-a duals united in fociety., But the refult which every imltant prefents, depends upon that of the'preceding inﬂaants, and has an inﬂuence on the infiants which follow.
