Realizing the absence of a suitable text on Electric Railways, treating of the Engineering Preliminaries and direct-current sub-station Operation, it has been the purpose of the writer to prepare such a volume. The method of treatment is similar to that followed in Elec tric Railways - Rolling Stock, by Ashe and Keiley, ex cept that an attempt has been made to increase the value of the volume as a reference by the insertion of problems, tables, and operating data, restricting the descriptive mat ter pertaining to apparatus.
