Parmi les grands esprits du dix-huitième siècle, Montesquieu est celui dont la vie nous est le moins connue. Nous avons, il est vrai, les Éloges qu'on fit après sa mort. D'Alembert, Maupertuis, le chevalier de Solignacne s'épargnèrent pas pour louer leur illustre ami; mais ces pièces d'apparat, dressées sur des mémoires fournis par M. de Secondât, ont le défaut de nous peindre l'auteur en buste et dans une attitude théâtrale. On voit l'écrivain, on ne voit pas l'homme. Ce n'est pas assez pour un âge aussi curieux et aussi sceptique que le nôtre.
