Excerpt from Lessons in Elementary Mechanics: Introductory to the Study of Physical Science, Designed for the Use of Schools, Academies, and Scientific Institutions, With Numerous Exercises

L. Motion. - Our earliest observations must have shown us that some things are moving and that others appear to be at rest. We know what motion means when we watch the rising of the sun, the passage of a bird through the air, the waving of the trees in the wind, or the rushing of the waves to the sea-shore. Every variety of matter seems to be endowed with the faculty of movement. The stone falls to the ground, the flower opens its petals to the sun, and living creatures of every size and shape move in endless ways.
