Pertenece, en verdad, la tarja, a esa categoría de cosas que atraen y desazonan a la par, que excitan a primera vista la curiosidad, para dejarla después in satisfecha. Por la lectura de la etiqueta que la acom paña y de algunas leyendas que contiene, llegase a conocer su procedencia y destino. Sábese, de ese modo, que es un'obsequio hecho a Belgrano por las damas de Potosí, cuando, después de vencer en Salta y en Tucumán, el general llegó triunfante a la opu lenta villa a fines del mes de junio de I 81 3. Tratase, por consiguiente, de un monumento conmemorati vo, asociado a una gran personalidad y a memora bles sucesos de nuestra historia. No estuviera cons tituído, como lo está, por una masa ingente de metales nobles y de la mejor ley; no hubiera sido repujado y cincelado, como lo ha sido, por hábiles artífices orfebreros, diestros en tratar asuntos de su arte, la tarja sería aún para nosotros objeto de subido valor documental. Examinemos, pues, el importante monumento, con interés de arqueólogo y con pa sión de historiador. Procuremos develar su signifi cado simbólico y tratemos de revivir mentalmente algunos de los magnos acontecimientos a los cuales se vincula el soberbio regalo, que el héroe, a quien - 9.
