Excerpt from Kaolin of Indiana
Less frequently has the attention of the manufacturer been attracted by the commercial possibilities presented through its utilization. Since the discovery in 1874 of a thick bed of kaolin on the property long owned by the late Dr. Joseph Gard ner in Lawrence County the kaolin from this deposit has been used intermittently.
In the autumn of 1916 the writer began investigations with a view to determining the origin and of extending the utiliza tion of the kaolin. One line of investigation led to the testing Of trial mixtures of kaolin and Indiana fire clays for the pos sible manufacture of refractories. The other line Of investiga tion concerned itself chiefly with a study of the origin of the kaolin. The results of these and other lines Of investigations are embodied in this report.
