Inhaltsangabe

Compendium Studii Theologiae, Part III: An Annotated Edition of Roger Bacon’s Early Scholastic Work This scholarly edition presents a fragment of Bacon’s Compendium, drawn from a late‑th century manuscript and edited with care by Hastings Rashdall. It offers readers access to the two‑part structure Bacon envisioned: first, the causes of error in human thought; and second, the establishment of truth and the refutation of error. The book situates Bacon as a late‑medieval thinker who emphasizes independent inquiry alongside critical engagement with authority.

Two framing sections outline how knowledge is communicated and how error can arise, followed by focused discussion on logic, language, and the nature of universals. The companion material helps readers understand the manuscript’s transmission, scribal variations, and the editor’s textual decisions. The volume also lists related Bacon fragments and addenda, shedding light on medieval theories of language, meaning, and logic.

What you’ll experience
- A clear, accessible presentation of Bacon’s arguments about how words relate to things and how meaning is formed
- Context for the learning environment of late 13th‑century scholasticism, including key debates about truth and error
- An introduction that explains manuscript history, editorial choices, and the work’s place in Bacon’s broader corpus
- An appendix and addenda that connect this fragment to other Baconian writings and related medieval texts

Ideal for students and general readers of history of philosophy, medieval logic, and Roger Bacon’s intellectual milieu. This edition is a solid entry point to Bacon’s thought on how knowledge is built and how errors spread in the pursuit of wisdom.
