At every point. In the neighbourhood of a magnet or conductor carrying a current there is a magnetic force, and the region within which this force manifests itself is called a magnetic field. At each point in a magnetic field the magnetic force has a certain direction and magnitude. F a. Very long magnetic needle is held with one pole at any point in a magnetic field and the other pole removed quite away from that point, the magnetic force tends to urge the pole held in that field in a certain direction, with a force which is proportional to the product of the strength of the pole and the strength of the field at that point. If a very small magnetic needle, pivoted at the centre, is held at any point in a field, two equal and opposite forces act upon its ends. If l is the magnetic length of this needle, m the strength of each pole, and H the strength of the field, then, when the small needle is held so that its length or axis is at right angles to the direction of the field, the couple or torque acting on it is equal to.

This Series of
Electrical 'laboratory IRotes ano iforms
is prepared for those who are practically engaged in the work of sy^ematic Laboratory Teaching, and who know the difficulty of obtaining from the majority of Laborato y accurate records of their work. A large part of a Teachers time and energy are t 1
repeating the same practical instructions to different Students, and m insisting on ca^ systematic records being made of the observations taken. The object f laboratory te * so far as beginners are concerned, is not merely to carry out a particular set or expenin ' but to train the Students in habits of accuracy of observation and in proper metho reporting results. Teachers, Demonstrators and Students in Electrical Laboratories will, it is felt, appreciate such a series of Elementary and Advanced Exercises ot Experimen Practical Electrical Measurements and Testing, for the most part based on the methods in use in the Electrical Engineering Laboratories of University College. London, but whion are perfectly general, and can be put into practice in any well-appointed Electrical Laboratory. These Exercises enable a permanent record to be kept of the Student s progress, wmon is available alike for the Student or the Teacher, and will form a valuable collection 01 information for future reference. . . ,
All suggestions for increasing the usefulness of the Series will receive every consideration if addressed to Mr. Geo. Tucker, Publisher, The Electrician, Salisbury Court, Fleet Street, London.
