Excerpt from The Great Lakes Naval Training Station: A History, Illustrated From Photographs

The youth of the Middle West might have gone to the sea board for its apprenticeship; Great Lakes might have become only a mere outfitting depot for naval recruits from Illinois and the few surrounding states, instead Of an establishment capable of quartering, feeding. And training as high as men at a time, which was its status late in the summer Of 1918.
