The botanical name of the plant (nico iana) was given it to commemorate the ser ices rendered by Jean Nicot, a French Ambas ador to Portugal. Seeds of the plant were ent by him from the Peninsula to the Queen, atherine de Medici, accompanied by a report ontaining such information as he could obtain oncerning it. The plant was first introduced nto Europe in 1558, by Francisco F ernandes, 1 physician, who had been sent by Philip II. >f Spain to investigate the products of Mexico. M: that time the plant was supposed to pos ess great healing powers.
