I wish to acknowledge my indebtedness to Dr. F. M. Comstock of Case School of Applied Science for kindly assistance in compiling this treatise. In gathering together the information contained herein I have consulted several authors, and in some cases have quoted directly from their work.

If this treatise should prove to be of any assistance to the coming generation of engineers, or if it should meet with favor among teachers of drawing, whose labor it is intended to lessen, the writer will feel well repaid for his efforts in behalf of a better understanding of the use of drawing instruments.
