I have endeavored to make this book plain and practical for the student and busy practitioner. I have dispensed with bibliographic references, and have made few citations of authorities. Moot ques tions have been given scant attention, and effete matter has been excluded. In the choice of technique I have aimed to give sufficient variety to meet the varied requirements and no more. Scientific methods in classification and arrangement have not been strictly adhered to whenever, in my judgment, a plain, connected narrative would render the text more intelligible.
