The Syracuse topographic quadrangle, which is here specially under consideration, includes an area one-fourth Of a degree square, in latitude 430 - 430 15' N. And longitude 76° - 76° 15' W. Situated near the geographic center of the State Of New York, including part of two of the great physiographic regions Of the State, and the outcropping edges Of many Of the stratigraphic units of the paleozoic rock series, it has many features in common with, and hence may be taken as. Typical Of, a rather broad belt extending east and west through the middle of the State.

The city Of Syracuse is on the line of the Erie canal; lies at the intersection of the east-west (new York Central and West Shore) and the north-south (delaware, Lackawanna and Western) rail ways, and has besides several branch lines radiating from the city and several suburban electric lines. Central location and excellent transportation facilities make it an important commercial center.
