Excerpt from Irish Distress and Its Remedies: The Land Question; A Visit to Donegal and Connaught in the Spring of 1880
In addition to the knowledge acquired as to the actual extent of the distress, much information was also obtained bearing upon the social condition and general circum stances of the Irish people, the results of which were from time to time forwarded to the Committee in London, and in part printed and privately circulated. Some letters also were inserted in the Times. It has been thought that the information thus obtained has a further value, and may tend to throw some light upon portions of the very difficult and complex problems which the country is called upon, as far as practicable, to solve.
