As to the derivation of surnames, I beg you to remember, that places were named before families. You have only to examine any of those names which serve for lands and also for persons, to see this plainly. If you found the name of Cruicbsnanles, or Prettyman, Black-mantle, or Great-bead, you would not hesitate. These are evidently coined for persons.
