Excerpt from Methods of Research in Microscopical Anatomy and Embryology
The importance which I attach to this point is not to be measured by the space devoted to it in the following pages; for the time which I could give to it has been from necessity very limited, so that I have scarcely done more than indicate what should be done on a much larger scale. Should the plan commend itself to the judgment of others, it may be more fully developed hereafter.
This class of facts forms a part of the embryological methods, embracing some notes on the occurrence of eggs appended thereto.

Excerpt from Methods of Research in Microscopical Anatomy and Embryology
The aim of this work is to supply, in a measure, a need which has been created by the rapid development of the methods of microscopical anatomy and embryology within the last few years. No effort has been made to give it an encyclopædic character, or to render it an exhaustive treatise of the subject in any of its aspects. With avalanches of methods constantly sweeping down upon us, it would be as futile as it is undesirable to attempt to enclose the whole field. We are already richly supplied with books on the microscope, which deal with its history, optical principles, forms of construction, accessories, modes of use, etc.; and histological descriptions are furnished in numerous systematic works. The important branch of methods represented by microphotography has also been handled in special works.
Pre-occupation of the ground in these directions is not, however, the only reason for the limitations imposed on this volume. Microscopical technique is no more closely connected with histological than embryological studies; and the practical considerations which would certainly make it advisable not to encumber an embryological treatise with a general survey of methods appear to me to hold equally in the case of histological text-books.
