Excerpt from The Experiences of a Barrister
Animated by these diabolical passions, Cartwright proceeded to his work. Harvey, he had too good reason to know, was in debt to persons who had made him advances and by means of artfully-concocted anonymous letters, evidently written by some one conversant with the matters on which he wrote, he succeeded in alarming the haberdasher's creditors. The consequences were - demands of immediate payment, and, in spite of the debtor's explanations and promises, writs, heavy law expenses, ruinous sacrifices, and ultimate bankruptcy. It may seem almost too marvelous for belief, but the story of this terrible revenge and its consequences is no fiction. Every incident in my narrative is true, and the whole may be found in hard outline in the records of the courts with which a few years ago I was familiar.

Excerpt from The Experiences of a Barrister
The series of tales contained in this volume, as well as those entitled "The Confessions of an Attorney," have been attributed to Samuel Warren, Esq., author of the "Diary of a Physician," "Ten Thousand-a-year," &c. To say nothing of the name given on the title page, which is evidently a nomme de plume, it must be confessed that the internal evidence of their having been written by Mr. Warren, is strong, and the fact that these tales, like those above named, first appeared in an Edinburgh Magazine, corroborates the supposition. One thing, however is certain, the author of these "Experiences" wields no common pen. It is believed that in this form these tales will continue to enjoy the popularity - a popularity almost unprecedented, which has been awarded them, as they have appeared at intervals in the Edinburgh Journal.
