Some portions of this book were written in Buckinghamshire, about five years ago. The greater part of the book, however, is of more recent origin and was written at the author's present home in mid-sussex. Certain words and phrases which appear in some of the sketches are peculiar to the locality in which those sketches were written and have there fore been excluded from other parts of the book.
