This book is a study of the fragmentary literary remains of early Scottish poetry, which began to emerge in the fourteenth century. In contrast with the southern branch, the language of these remnants is a more direct descendant of the ancient Anglian speech, and shows none of the transition to something more distinctly Scottish. The author positions this early poetry within its historical and literary context, showing how it continued the literary traditions of the ancient Northumbrian and English. Of particular interest is the thematic depth of this early Scottish poetry, as seen in the selection and treatment of subject matter and form. Its themes speak to universal experiences of love, loss, and longing. The author argues that this early period of Scottish literature, despite its fragmentary condition, reveals a high level of creativity and artistry, indicating that this literary tradition is a rich and important part of the broader narrative of English literature and culture.
