Excerpt from Whispering Hope

Scottish Wild Flowers.

O! Children, list, the wild bells ring,
And wave their bonnets blue;
While heavily the lilies swing
Their crests begemmed with dew.
Where streamlets gush 'mid ferns, and rush
The rocks and pebbles o'er,
Come forth in bands with willing hands,
The solitudes explore.

Come where the blue speedwell, thistle, and heather bell
Bask in the sunshine, or glance in the showers;
Buttercups sweet unfold, gowan and marigold,
Varied and beautiful, "Scottish Wild Flowers."

And think, while wandering through the glades,
Or resting 'neath the trees,
Of buds that pine in sunless shades,
More dear to God than these.
A child's low wail, from lips grown pale,
Sweet eyes your aid implore:
Some little breast, by pain distressed,
Amid the city's roar.

Come where the blue speedwell, &c.
