Excerpt from Studies in the Scriptures: The Plan of the Ages
Christian people are becoming more and more awake to the fact that a great tidal wave Of unbelief is sweep ing over Christendom -not the blasphemous atheism voiced by Thomas Paine and Robert Ingersoll, but the cultured kind represented in the scholarship of our day, which makes the danger all the more insidious.

Excerpt from Studies in the Scriptures: The Plan of the Ages
After being for several years a member of the orthodox Congregational Church, the author of this volume awakened to the fact that there must be something radically wrong in some or in all of the conflicting Creeds of Christendom; and in attempting to harmonize them with each other and with common sense, he was led to the very brink of Infidelity, inferring that the Bible, like the creeds, must be self-contradictory and unreasonable, since they all claim to be founded on the Bible. However, under God's providence he was led to examine the Scriptures themselves, entirely apart from human prejudices, creeds and traditions. As a result of earnest desire and prayer to know the truth, and years of patient study of the Bible, he was led of the Spirit, through the Word, to see a beauty, simplicity and harmony in the divine revelation, alike satisfying to his heart and his reason - far beyond all he had ever asked or expected or would have believed possible. He now can sing from the heart those words which he had long wished might fully and truly express his experience: -
"How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in his excellent Word."
Nor should this Bible harmonizing and heart and head satisfying latter-day light upon the Divine Word surprise those familiar with the Scriptures; for they will at once recall that God has foretold that it would be so - that "The path of the just the [Lord's justified Church] is as the shining light, which shineth more and more unto the perfect day." Moreover, it is stated to be a part of the divine plan to give forth the Truth during the Gospel age gradually, as "meat in due season" to the household of faith. And further, through the Prophet God has most clearly foreshown the present increase of knowledge on all subjects, and that now, too, the secret or mystery of the divine plan would be due to be unfolded to his people, as an offset to the skeptical influences of much of the present-day learning, philosophies and worldly cares. (See Daniel 12: 4, 9, 10; and the text quoted on the title page.)
