Excerpt from Introduction to the Books of the Old Testament: With Analyses and Illustrative Literature

Hebrew Bible, as best suited to our plan, because, while that order ignores the date of composition and formal contents, it harmonizes with an apparent design in the unfolding of ruling ideas. The Triple Division the Law, the Prophets, and the Hagiographa - gives us three clearly defined ideas, viz.: The Law is the foun dation of the whole revelation, the special discipline by which a chosen race was trained from a savage wilful ness to the accomplishment of its divine work. The Prophets portray the struggles of the same people when they come into closer connection with the kingdoms of the world, and were led to look for the inward antitypes of the outward precepts. The Hagiographa carry the divine lesson yet further, and Show its working in the various phases of individual life, and in relation to the great problems of thought and feeling, which pre sent themselves by a necessary law in the later stages of civilization. Wescott, art. Canon, Smith's Bib. Dict. Vol. I. P. 359.
