Excerpt from Six Stars
The Six Stars store is a fine bit Of property, standing where the ridge road and the turnpike meet, commanding a view of the milldam, and beyond that of the scrub country that lpes away to the southward, getting higher and higher until it breaks down into the great val ley, where the farms are rich and the barns all white and green. The boy paused on the steps and looked away to where a line of tree tops fringed into the sky. He thought Of that valley beyond. He had had glimpses of it as he stood there at the head of the ridge that jutted into it. It was so different from this, his own land of rough woods, and choppings, and clear ings and stone-covered farms, that calling the Elysium to mind sufiiced to alter any intention he had Of making his friend Smith an Offer for his General Emporium. But he stepped within, anyway, just to see what was doing.
