HE chief object of this book is to so far arouse the interest of its readers as to lead them to ex amine into the truth or falsehood of the grave popu lar accusations laid against the Catholic Church and her priesthood and people; and also to induce them to test'the value of the evidence offered in support of the boastful claims one so often hears made for the alleged superior intellectual character and moral influence of Protestantism and modern Secularism.

The better to realize this object the rule adopted in its preparation limited the admission of any evi dence to what might be found furnished by Protest ant Witnesses and ofiicial authorities; excluding any distinctively Catholic testimony. In two or three in stances quotations have been made from Catholic writers, but these are offered only as corroborative of the evidence given by non-catholic ones.
