But at the outset of his career he gave serious offence to the authorities by an extravagant remonstrance against the order requiring professors to cut off their mus taches, and he never overcame the effect of this youth He was banished to remote and unimportant stations - Lesneven (finisterre), Rodez, Grenoble - and passed, with difficulty and slowly, through the grades to that of Professor of Philosophy. Of philosophy M. Sarcey has, as the reader will see, a varied and useful store, but it hard.
