In preparing this volume for the press, the author felt that he might almost as well go into an October woods, sweep up the crisp leaves that carpet its solemn crypts, and try to replace them in living beauty upon the bare arms of the beeches and maples, as to undertake to bring these wanderers home again. But certain occult influences, singularly in accord with some subterranean cur rent of his own thought, have encouraged him to complete the work. After all, he is rather glad to welcome his children to his fireside once more.
