When I sat down to commit these reminiscences to paper, I felt the extreme difficulty, and even delicacy, of the task I had undertaken; and I am too well aware how inadequately I have performed it; but I have been impelled throughout by a consciousness that the peculiar relations in which I had stood with men who have won renown in the struggle for literary distinction, had supplied me with facts sufficiently interesting to be laid before the world.
