In spite of that optimistic view of the survival of the fittest it is un' fortunately true that society is occasionally very indifferent to its contemporary litera ture and Ofttimes injudicious in its preserva tion, not infrequently permitting that to be lost which would be of incalculable value to the historian of the future.
