Count Carlo Gozzi, the Venetian, says ingenuously that humanity has always quested after the marvelous like a hound, which may be true enough; and yet, he who has an extraordinary tale to tell must hesitate. But there are considerations other than my own which lead to this narration; and on their account I am will ing to risk people decrying it. For I have felt, and Monseigneur Reux has felt (i call him still that this should be told, not only to explain certain episodes for the students of contemporary manners and politics, but as well to give the true reasons for the seemingly inex plicable conduct of a family whose affairs.
