It was in this reign that a very important change took place in the Church, which had a remarkable effect on the Puritan controversy. During Elizabeth's time the dispute had been concerning the ceremonies and government of the Church; in doctrines both prelates and Puritans were agreed all held Augustinian views, and all agreed in interpreting the Articles of the Anglican Church in an Augustinian or Calvinistic sense.
