It comes down at last to this: what canf' I do? My first step must be a simple acceptance. I cannot do everything. Does this sound like defeat before we even start? No, our insistence upon perfection is Often an excuse for doing nothing. If I can't do everything, then I won't do anything. Our jobs and our friendships and our pleasures and our religion often go sour, not because they are empty or evil or doomed, but because we have hob bled ourselves with an easy and soaring and false perfectionism which demands everything or noth ing. Hitch our wagon to a star? Why, too many times we won't even hitch it to a horse. Go the second mile? Yes, but you can't do it until you go the first.

In Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities, Defarge said wearily, It is pos sible that it may not come, during our lives. We shall not see the triumph. To which Madame re plied, We shall have helped it. In our lifetime we may not see the final triumph of every shining dream of the human spirit, but it is given us to say, We Shall have helped it.
