Excerpt from The Real Jesus: A Review of His Life, Character, and Death, From a Jewish Standpoint, Addressed to Members of the Theistic Church
Moreover, it has always seemed to me that a person unfettered by sectarian prejudice has a right to instruct any portion of his countrymen, so far as they are willing to receive his instruction. If we go into a school or college, we shall see the pupils regularly grouped in classes according to their ages or gradations of progress, and it is not necessary that every teacher Should be strictly confined to one class. He who is now giving lessons to youths or young men may presently do the same to children Of tender age, if he only knows how to adapt his instruction properly to their capacity. A nation's religious or sectarian groups are in like manner distinguished, to some extent, by grades of intelligence, and though there cannot be anything like a regular exchange of pulpits. Main tained, a person who teaches voluntarily in one group may within certain limits very reasonably and conscientiously teach in another.

During the eleven years that I have been perched on this hill overlooking the ancient city which witnessed the introduction of monk-worship by St. Augustine, I have endeavoured to instruct in a humble way, and to a very limited extent, two classes of people - the Christian population of the country, and those who, like ourselves and the Jews, are compelled by conscience to stand outside the pale of Christianity.
