Excerpt from What Do We Want?
What do we want? It appears that today there is no room for this question. Why, everybody knows what we want. We want Swaraj; we want the freedom of our country. We are fighting for the right of the Indian people to live as a free nation, to rule itself, to determine its own destiny according to its own needs and desires. To attain independent nationhood, - this is our goal. Who does not know it? Where is the self-respecting Indian who is not ready to take part in the struggle which will lead us to this goal? Has not the entire Indian nation declared its de termination to conquer Swarai? Are not more and more people coming into the struggle every day? All are con tributing their share; every class is taking part in the common struggle. Our goal is no longer unknown; the very children in the schools are aware of it and are ready to contribute their mite towards the achievement of Swarai. Our enemy knows this, and is using all means, fair and foul, to thwart us. To come now and ask, What do we want?, is to betray utter ignorance. It is ridiculous, - stupid.
