Upon the formative period of Rhode Island his tory, the author of the present study has dwelt at length in Rhode Island: Its Making and its Meaning, published in 1902. The period in ques tion was characterized by a separatism that was intense, but subsequent periods have by no means been wanting in this feature, and it is largely the object of the present book to point out the influ ence of separatism in determining the course of events in Rhode Island during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
