Excerpt from Feeble-Mindedness From the Medical Point of View
That the hereditary causes are all-sufficient arid final in the accounting for the entire group of mental defectives. Such a view, while worthy of respectful consideration, is not altogether borne out by the investiga tions made and being made in this direc tion in both Europe and America. We al most know to a positive certainty now that at least 35 per cent. Of the ordinary type of feeble mindedness 1s due to normal heredity, while it is said fully 65 per cent of normal heredity obtains 1n low grade idiocy. It is a recognized fact in medicine that presence of distinctive signs of disease in but 60 or 70 per cent. Of all cases suffering from al most any disorder, makes the diagnosis of doubtful value, while in the field of causa tion of disease, even in a small group of absolutely negative findings as regards the particular cause, renders that specific cause not sufficiently determinative to speak of it as the main cause, much less the sole cause.
