I have continued to give this course of Lectures every year, making such modifications and additions as our increas ing experience has demanded. The present edition contains the course delivered by me at University College Hospital in the session of 187 2 - 3, and comprises therefore all the most recent alterations, as well as two Lectures not in the previous editions, making fourteen in all, instead of twelve as before. My aim has been to produce in the smallest possible com pass an epitome of practical knowledge concerning the nature and treatment of the diseases which form the subject of the work; and I venture to believe that my intention has been more fully realized in this volume than in either of its prede.
