In the original plan a chapter on the Chinese in other Pacific states was contemplated, but since, up to 1882, over 70 per cent. Of the Chinese were in California, it was thought best for the sake of space to omit it. However, many of the illustrations in the chapters on administration, competition and assimilation, have been drawn from this unused material and it is believed that no factor essential to a just presentation of the subject has been neglected.
