HE present volume forms a companion to the Author's Praises of Israel, and the two books together provide a short introduction to the Poetical Books of the Bible. The phrase Ology Of the title is not strictly accurate, for the Song of Songs does not properly belong to wisdom-literature, and Ecclesiastes is not poetical. Further, a complete study of Wisdom Literature ought to include the two extra canonical books, Ecclesiasticus and the Wisdom of Solomon. But the canonical books of the Old Testament treated of in these two small volumes belong to the same group of Scriptures and may be conveniently studied together.

The present volume completes the short Introduction to the Poetical Books of the Bible begun in The Praises of Israel, published last year. The phraseology of the title is not perfectly accurate, for Ecclesiastes is not poetical, and the Song of Songs does not properly belong to Wisdom-Literature. But the books of the Bible treated of in these two small volumes belong to the same group of Scriptures, and are conveniently studied together. If these brief Manuals prove to be of service to readers who have not time or opportunity to use larger and more valuable works, the labour of preparing them will be fully repaid.
