Judge chase. From a Baltimore Paper. - Amongst the many most scandalous and odious circumstances of the Hero of Mud Fort's election was the threatened attack on Judge Chase's house. The vile partizans of Smith had the insolence to menace it with an attack. The Judge, I am told, sent to inform the Sheriff of it, who very cooly replied, that he was an "officer of the day, and not of the night." Some of Judge Chase's friends went to his house, his lady and his females of the house left it, and every preparation was made by the gentlemen to give the infamous canaille a suitable reception.

Indelible disgrace to the city and to the country: A Judge obliged to make his house a redoubt; to set up with arms in his hands, to defend his life against - against whom? - why, against the "virtuous citizens," the voters, the constituents, the choosers of lawgivers! - and this, too, merely because he had dared to exercise his right of speaking and voting in common with them! So much for universal suffrage.
